English: 102 - Nieves - Adaptation Evaluation

English 102 - College Reading & Composition II

English 102 continues the development of skillful reading and writing, using the material of short stories, plays, and poetry.

Research Topic

One or more themes from a novel/play of your choosing AND film/television adaptation.

This essay is focused on picking a text, short story, folk tale, etc. and developing an analysis of how effectively that piece has been adapted.

The most important thing to focus on is the following evaluative criteria that will be used as the basis for evaluation.

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a literary adaptation giving consideration to the following questions:

  • Is the adaptation a straight or a loose interpretation of the novel?
  • Can the adaptation stand alone, or is it necessary to have read the novel to understand the film?
  • Does the adaptation capture the novel’s formal elements: the theme, characterization, style, tone, and plot of the novel?
  • Is the adaptation a quality film/show in its own right?
  • When the screenwriter and/or director changes any of the formal elements of the novel, is the overall message retained?
