English 101 - College Reading & Composition I

English 101 is a reading and composition course designed to prepare students to handle a wide range of college writing assignments and to acquire the analytic skills necessary for effective academic preparation. Stress is placed on the organization and composition of objective expository and argumentative essays, including the research paper.

 

Research Topic

Garbology

  • Refer to the research prompt provided by your instructor. 
  • Choose one:
  1. America is a consumer society. Americans spend much time shopping, buying, consuming, and then trashing. Given what you have learned about Americans' consumer habits and their garbage, analyze how Americans and the companies that do business in America could alter their trash habits and reduce trash. While your paper can include recycling, upcycling, and downcycling, examine other solutions as well.
  2. Given what you have learned about Americans' consumer habits and their garbage, to what extent does America's trash impact not only America but also other countries? This should include the short-term and long-term effects.
  3. Now that you understand how much trash is created and where it ends up, contemplate the impact on the oceans and waterways. To what extent has trash impacted the oceans and waterways around the globe? This should include the short-term and long-term effects.

OneSearch Tab

Use OneSearch to locate various types of resources

  1. Type your search term in the box then click, Search. 
  2. Use the Refine Results menu on the left side of the search results page to narrow or expand your search.
    • Available at LAHC and Resource Type will be the most helpful in the beginning stages of your research.
    • There are many additional options listed for Resource Type that are not shown in the image below.
  3. Click Apply Filters to confirm your choices and update the search results.

  • Use the drop down field to select a database by name if you already know which one you want to use. 
  • Click Library Database A-Z List to view the list of descriptions.
