Creative Commons Overview

Creative Commons provides creators with a way to manage the copyright permissions of their works, usually with the specific purpose of allowing the reuse and sharing of their material. Having a Creative Commons license attached to a work signals to others that specific permissions are granted.

Creative Commons licenses may be applied to any type of work, including educational resources, music, photographs, databases, government and public sector information, and many other types of material.

Creating Creative Common Licensing

Teaching Materials you Create:

1.  Navigate to https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/ and scroll down to click Get Started.

2.  Follow the directions and fill in the appropriate bubble selections according to how you want to license your course material(s).

3. Copy and paste the creative commons license and image on your course materials that is provided at the bottom of the webpage. The red, green, and blue boxes indicate the following:

  • Red box: copy and paste this on your teaching material
  • Green box: add this code to your website
  • Blue box: design option

 

4. Distribute the course materials to your students.

Finding Creative Commons Licensed Course Materials Online

There are plenty of tools online to help you find Creative Commons resources to teach with online.

Creative Commons offers a "CC Search" tool to assist you with identifying resources that have a Creative Commons license.

Sources:

  • Google and Bing both have filters when searching for images in their advanced search options that let you limit results to Creative Commons resources.
  • YouTube also has a filter for Creative Commons videos.

Creative Commons License on YouTube:

1. Navigate to YouTube

2. Type your keyword in the search box and click search

3. Click on Filter

4. Click on Creative Commons

5. Under the description, click Show More/Show Less to view the CC license

6. Copy the URL link or embed code for the video to distribute to your class

 

 

 

 

Additional tools to edit the video

  1. Navigate to Keepvid.com (signup or login)
  2. The video will be downloaded and sharable as a MP4 or available for edits.
