Breathe

Student: Physics

Description: A friend of mine recommended me to submit an entry. I usually write more poetry, but include storytelling within a lot of scenes. I use writing as a platform to reflect the world I see and to share my perspective.

The Swing

Student: Mechanical Engineering

Description: As a baseball player I wrote about my favorite sport. I think there is nothing more electric than hitting an home run. The crack of the bat to watching the ball fly over the fence is a one of a kind feeling.

I Can Give You the Moon

The message

Student

Precious

Student: English

Description: A simple story about a classic fantasy character.

Music For Lovers Only

Student

Description: The story and its title were inspired by the Jackie Gleason album of the same name, "Music For Lover Only". It inspired a scene that was intimate and tender, yet also tinged with sadness.

One of Hearts

Student

Description: I didn't have any particular inspiration for this piece - I had my lamp on by my bed when I was writing it, and it felt very quiet. I was trying to write a piece that would capture how that silence would feel if it was my last one. I thought this story brought out a tragic, understated sense of "That's it?"

Good Old Days

Faculty: English

Description: To be honest, I was just testing out the form. Well, maybe not "just"; I love a challenge, and 55 words is a very fun box to create in. I'm a gamer, so I decided to make the first three lines a haiku :)

No Love in Deception

Student: Dual Enrollment

Description: The short story is about a young male knight who was given a mission to steal important information from a young noble lady. In order to do that, he decided to butter up with the young lady's maid. Making sure to display subtle hints of interest and flirtatous remarks. It is clear that the knight has greatly looked down upon her, should she really ask like a fool who simply does not know?

With Gratitude

Description: Exquisite Corpse writing exercise by the Creative Writing Club

The Hunter

Student

Power Off: The Effective Reset

Student: English

Description: My Inspiration comes from the looming, ever-present gauge of worthiness in society based on credit. Credit is a peculiar societal mechanism that is only ever spoken about neutrally. If we ever examined the amounts of approvals for bankruptcy based on demographics, we would be surprised, disappointed, and made aware systemic discrimination exists. My story is called The Effective Reset, and the premise is what would happen if the credit bureaus teamed up with pharmaceutical insurance and the federal witness protection program. These complex systems and mechanisms make tracking systemic inequality murky and hard to quantify, but what would that look like if these industries ever shared information or, worse, merged? What would that program be? It would be a complete and total social reset. This reset form already exists in the form of the above programs (credit/bankruptcy/identity/witsec). Individually, they can wipe and alter a person's history, but together? Would society allow that? ..or is it already happening? My writing style is meant to have density and subtext. I target critical readers of any age, emphasizing horror and mind-bending paradoxical and psychological genres. I have a writing history from a young age for my leadership academy, where I first developed and gave speeches to hundreds of parents, students, and cadre staff. I have multitudes of premises and await an opportunity to flesh them out. Without further adieu:

The Loquacious Woman

Student: English

Love Burns

Faculty: English

Description: A gothic tale inspired by a writing exercise with the Creative Writing Club
