Course Description

VOC ED 269CE Library Technical Services 

This 8-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to the knowledge required for success in library aide and technician positions. The curriculum focuses on theoretical knowledge, wherein students will have the opportunity to learn library operations, customer service, technology, and materials management.

Tuesdays 6:05-8:20 PM 

VOC ED 270CE Practical Library Technical Services 

This 8-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to the skills required for success in library aide and technician positions. The curriculum focuses on practical application of knowledge, wherein students will have the opportunity to apply skills in the areas of library operations, customer service, technology, and materials management.

Thursdays 6:05-8:20 PM

The Library Technical Service courses will prepare students who are interested in becoming a library paraprofessional, including a library aide, library technician, library assistant, and library associate, and improving skills of individuals who currently work in these paraprofessional positions.

Who could benefit?

  • Those who work as library aides, library assistants, library technicians, or library associates. This coursework will enhance the skills of individuals in these positions.
  • Those who wish to enter these careers. Evidence of academic coursework is a desirable qualification for employment in the County of Los Angeles Public Library system and the Los Angeles Community College district libraries.
  • Those holding student worker positions in the library
  • Students who are enrolled in LAHC’s College Research Methods course (Library Science 101)

According to the Center of Excellence, in the Los Angeles area, there is projected growth in these jobs through 2028, with typical entry-level hourly wages ranging between $18.56 and $18.92. Experienced workers can expect to earn wages between $27.12 and $27.35 per hour.

How do I enroll?

  1. Noncredit Enrollment process.
  2. Enroll concurrently in VOC ED 269CE and VOC ED 270CE. 8 weeks, two courses, zero cost.
  3. Show up to class on February 10, 2026.
